curriculum

Pre-school education is about learning, playing, exploring and having fun. Your child will be encouraged to do all these things with friends and on their own, choosing from a wide range of experiences and activities.

The new Curriculum for Excellence comes into practice from summer 2010. We have been embedding this since 2008. The curriculum has four capacities: Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens, Successful Learners, Effective Contributors which are broken down into eight strands: Health and Wellbeing, Literacy and English, Numeracy and maths, Technology, Science, Expressive arts, Religious and Moral Studies and Social Studies.

 Health and Wellbeing

Allowing children to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity, positive emotional, mental and social development as well as knowing the link between food and health. By allowing children to make choices, develop ideas and develop confidence in themselves and their abilities.

 Literacy and English

Giving the children the opportunity to talk, listen, read and write on a daily basis by encouraging children to share experiences. Contribute to discussions giving children access to different styles of texts i.e fiction and non fictional books, poems, newspaper, charts and maps, instruction books and letters. We also use print in different languages + show an awareness to languages other than english spoken by the children in the nursery.

 Numeracy

Develop children's numeracy skills across all areas of the curriculum. Children are encouraged to count, measure and weigh, use money and have awareness of time and problem solve.

 Science

Children are helped to make sense of the world by exploring and learning about their environment. They learn about the natural world, are encouraged to use their senses, discover how things work and how they can make them work. They begin to understand and use simple mathematical processes like sorting and grouping as well as identifying numbers.

Religious and Moral Education

Celebrate religions and cultural festivals and respect the different faiths of the families within the nursery and in society. We encourage children to show respect for themselves and other as well as developing an awareness of what is right and wrong.

 Expressive Arts

We encourage children to develop artistic skills and enhance their creative talent through role-play, art and craft activities, drama, music and dance.

Social studies

Children are encouraged to learn about people around the world and in their local environment as well as looking at how people lived in the past or in the different circumstances. We also look at the Scottish culture.

Technologies

Children become better at running, catching, balancing and co-ordinating their bodies.Opportunities to develop fine motor skills, eg handling pencils, scissors and jigsaws, all aid physical development.
