curriculum

Pre-school education is about learning, playing, exploring and having fun. Your child will be encouraged to do all these things with friends and on their own, choosing from a wide range of experiences and activities.

In 2010 the Scottish Government implemented the Curriculum for Excellence which for the first time covers children from 3 years to 18. Our aspiration is for all children to be Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors. The Curriculum for Excellence is split into 9 curricular areas with cross curricular learning encouraged.

Health and Wellbeing

Allowing children to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity, positive emotional, mental and social development as well as knowing the link between food and health. By allowing children to make choices, develop ideas and develop confidence in themselves and their abilities.

Literacy and English

Giving the children the opportunity to talk, listen, read and write on a daily basis by encouraging children to share experiences. Contribute to discussions giving children access to different styles of texts i.e fiction and non fictional books, poems, newspaper, charts and maps, instruction books and letters. We also use print in different languages + show an awareness to languages other than english spoken by the children in the nursery.

Numeracy

Develop children's numeracy skills across all areas of the curriculum. Children are encouraged to count, measure and weigh, use money and have awareness of time and problem solve.

Expressive Arts

We encourage children to develop artistic skills and enhance their creative talent through role-play, art and craft activities, drama, music and dance.

Religious and Moral Education

Celebrate religions and cultural festivals and respect the different faiths of the families within the nursery and in society. We encourage children to show respect for themselves and other as well as developing an awareness of what is right and wrong.
Science

As all children are naturally curious about the world around them we aim to use this curiosity and allow them experiment with new technologies, problem solve and always develop an understanding of the living, physical and material world. By asking open- ended questions it allows children to think about what is happening around them.

Social studies

Children are encouraged to learn about people around the world and in their local environment as well as looking at how people lived in the past or in the different circumstances. We also look at the Scottish culture.

Technologies

Children are encouraged to use and understand of technological equip. The learn about ICT and computing science, navigational skill, cooking appliances and understanding that technology has a purpose.
