Outside is not just somewhere to let off steam although
it should be used for that too. It is a
place where the whole curriculum can be
offered and should be planned for in the
same way the inside rooms are. Over the
last few years we have developed the large
nursery garden to enable this, and staff
have under gone training on how to cover
all areas of the curriculum outdoors as
well as indoors. We have also introduced
an outdoor policy so children can choose
when they want to go to the garden and what
they would like to do there.
|
| We are very keen for the
children to experience and learn from the
outside environment and local community. Because
of this we try and go on as many outings as
possible. We pay regular visits to the local
library, park, museums, art galleries and
many of Edinburgh’s tourist attractions. |
| We will also from time
to time go on a bigger outing if the children
have an interest in certain things, volcanoes
(Dynamic Earth) and sharks (Deep Sea World)
to name a few. |
| We are also lucky enough
to be able to use a secret valley in the Borders,
where the children can really explore the
outdoor environment and get back to nature.
We are planning to develop this site as a
forest school location. |
| Parents sign a permission
for outings slip in their initial settling
forms. But for some bigger outings such as
Deep Sea World, East Links Farm etc further permission
will be asked for. |
