Under 3s Bruntsfield

The under 3s' side of the nursery is divided between two rooms to cater for the changing stages of a child's early years. We have a curriculum in place based on the national document 'Birth to three' which is a celebration of each learning step the children achieve.
Baby room

The baby room has a maximum of 6 children aged between 3 -18 months, depending on their mobility and the developmental needs of the individual child. We have 2 members of staff. There is no set routine in this room as the as the day is dictated by the individual needs of children. The staff offer a wide range of activities and resources to stimulate the babies' bodies and minds and encourage them to reach their first milestones, such as reaching out for toys and, eventually, crawling.

Tweenie/Toddler room

This room can have up to 7 children at any one time with 2 members of staff. The age of the children is from about 18 months to 3 years. The room is for children who are now confident in movement and need a more structured environment to learn new skils. They enjoy activities such as singing, story time, arts and crafts, sand and water play, table toys. They have a house corner, story corner, music area and construction area and smalll world toys are always available so they can begin to make their own choices and decisions. They also make great use of the indoor climbing frame. They enjoy snack and lunch together, making both experiences sociable and fun.

All under 3s' staff have time for planning outwith the rooms to keep observations up to date and incorporate the children's interests as well as following the long term plan of the major festivals and cultural events during the year.

Birth to three

The Nursery have been using the Birth to three document to support our children and staff to create an environment which recognises the importance of the first few years of life and how they influence the children's development. The framework is key to giving them a sense of self confidence and preparing them for the future.

The main principles of the document are:

To ensure that the nursery has the best interests of the child in mind at all times

To ensure positive relationships are encouraged within the nursery environment

To promote awareness of ways in which children learn

Together they support the young child's all-round development , acknowledging every learning step the child makes, taking into account the age and stage of the individual child by encouraging the child to explore, investigate and participate in new opportunites  and experiences thus encouraging the children to become more confident learners.

The framework is based on three main principles for effective practice.

Relationships

Relationships are influential. They are the basis of effective learning, but also for healthy development and the emotional wellbeing of our young children.

Responsive Care

Demonstrating a sensitive approach and knowing and accepting each child and respecting each child as an individual.

Respect

Each child is an individual, a person who has the right to be responded to and treated with genuine respect at all times.
